Eating steamed shrimp is compulsory in Maryland. Old Bay Seasoning is the secret!

Prep Time: 5 minutes    Serving Size: 1 pound cooked

  • 1/2 cup cider vinegar or beer
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Old Bay Seasoning; 1 tablespoon in the liquid, more for coating the shrimp
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound shrimp, deveined but with shell on

Combine vinegar or beer, water, Old Bay Seasoning and salt in a deep stock pot. Place a steamer basket or colander so it sits above the liquid. Put the deveined shrimp in a bowl and completely cover with Old Bay Seasoning. It will take at least 3 tablespoons. Place the shrimp in the steamer basket, cover the pot and bring liquid to a boil over medium heat. Lower the heat and steam until tender and pink, about 5 minutes. Shrimp may be eaten immediately or served at room temperature. Left over steamed shrimp makes a great shrimp salad. Peel and chop the shrimp. Add chopped celery, a little minced onion and mayonnaise. All amounts are to taste.
